New parents in Satellite Town often do two opposite things in January: they underdress a baby for a foggy walk, or they bury the face under a heavy razai because the gas is off. Both can harm. Dr. Sidrah’s winter rule is simple: warm body, clear face, layers you can peel.

The layer test
- Base: dry cotton vest / onesie.
- Middle: cardigan or light sweater.
- Outer: wrap or jacket for outdoors — remove indoors.
- Feel the chest or back of the neck, not the hands. Cool hands can be normal. A sweaty neck means too many layers.
Load-shedding, heaters, and smoke
When electricity or gas cuts, families light coal or a gas heater in the room where the baby sleeps. That smoke is a pneumonia risk. Keep combustion heat in another space if you can. Never leave a heater running beside a cot. Do not share a bed under a heavy quilt with a newborn.
Winter feeding and dry skin
Babies may feed more often in the cold — that is normal. If feeds drop, nappies dry, or the baby is too sleepy to wake, that is a clinic day. Dry air cracks cheeks and the nappy area; a plain emollient is enough unless there is infection. Scabies and infected scratches also rise in crowded winter homes — do not treat with leftover steroid cream.
Warm enough
Neck warm, face clear, baby settling between feeds.

FAQs
How many layers should a Sargodha baby wear in January?
Usually one more layer than you are comfortable in, with the face uncovered. Check the neck. Sweat means peel a layer.
نوزائیدہ کو کتنے کپڑے پہنائیں؟
تہ در تہ، منہ کھلا۔ گردن گرم ہو، پسینہ نہ ہو۔ بھاری رضائی منہ پر نہ ڈالیں۔
Is a room heater safe next to the cot?
Keep flame or coal heat out of the sleep room. Dry heat also cracks skin. A parent in the room and a clear cot is safer than a heater at the rail.
